FOR THE LOVE OF HISTORICAL ROMANCE by Kathleen Bittner Roth

Welcome back to History Undressed, our regular first Tuesday blogger and author, Kathleen Bittner Roth! Kathleen Bittner Roth!

FOR THE LOVE OF HISTORICAL ROMANCE

by
Kathleen Bittner Roth

You must love reading historical romance or you wouldn’t be reading this, right? Ever since I swiped my mother’s romance novels off her night stand, historical romance has been my favorite—which is why I chose that subgenre when I began my writing career. If you’ve read any of my novels, it doesn’t take long to figure out that I include at least one very unusual woman in every story, one who dares to dance outside the perimeters of society’s stringent dictates. In Portrait of a Forbidden Lady, (Those Magnificent Malverns series—each book is also a stand-alone), we have such daring ladies in spades. All the Malvern women have a rebellious streak. They think nothing of leaving their side saddles behind to ride astride, be it bareback or using a man’s saddle. They’ve also raced straight through the corridor of their fabulous estate, in the front and out the back a time or two. Why not? Their wild brothers did it first.

I do a lot of research for my stories which is how I discovered that ladies of high breeding, when residing at their country estates, often dispensed with side saddles and borrowed or had made, more fitting (and certainly more comfortable) male attire. Empress Elizabeth of Austria was a famed horsewoman who rode astride whenever she could get away with it.

But these Malvern young ladies aren’t the only daring women in this series. Their grandmother is the most unique, bazaar woman of them all and oh, did I have fun creating her! I fashioned her after Lady Hester Stanhope. Niece to William Pitt the Younger, the unmarried socialite acted as his hostess and personal assistant when he was England’s Prime Minister (he was a bachelor). Noted for her beauty, intelligence and conversational skills, Lady Hester did such a smashing job serving her uncle that upon his death, the government awarded her a lifetime pension, which she promptly used to pursue a scandalous life in the Middle East, dressing in male attire and taking on a string of lovers, one twelve years younger than her. I created a friendship between Lady Hester Stanhope and the Malvern grandmother, and let her share some of the rebellious lady’s escapades in her youth.

If you haven’t read Portrait of a Forbidden Lady, good news! It’s on sale until August 13th for .99!
Pop over to Entangled Publishing where a Summer Carnival is in progress with lots of sales going on. Below are just a few of them at 99 cents: http://www.entangledpublishing.com/

JUST A KISS
It's in His Kiss novella by Ally Broadfield

Charlotte Lightwood has one season to find a husband or she’ll be forced to marry her guardian’s loathsome cousin. With no title or dowry, she doesn’t have much hope of making a good match. Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley, has been the most eligible bachelor on the marriage mart for more years than he cares to count and is very aware of his duty to marry a woman who will add to the wealth and stature of his title.

Sebastian makes Charlotte an offer she can’t refuse: he will pretend to court her to help her attract more suitors in exchange for her advice about which ladies he should pursue. As they work together, their mutual attraction grows. When they realize they just might be perfect for one another, they must decide whether to bow to the dictates of society or follow their hearts.

Kathleen Bittner Roth thrives on creating passionate stories featuring characters who are forced to draw on their strength of spirit to overcome adversity and find unending love. I'm thrilled to share with you my good friend, and History Undressed's regular first Tuesday blogger's newest release!!!

PORTRAIT OF A FORBIDDEN LADY

Entangled Publishing
Release date: 03-21-16

Book Two in the series - Those Magnificent Malverns - also a stand alone

A young widow returns to her childhood home after a forced absence and faces her first and only love, but despite their powerful attraction, danger compels her to remain his forbidden lady.

About the Book:

LADY GEORGIANA CRESSINGTON is living a nightmare. Coerced by her father into returning to her childhood home, the young widow becomes a pawn in his heartless game. Her return to Summerfield Hall reunites her with the man she once loved—before their hearts were shattered by a devastating betrayal.

SIR ROBERT GARRICK, an artist knighted by the queen, lives alone in a mansion near the family estate Georgiana’s duplicitous father won in a crooked card game. Rob sets out to regain Summerfield Hall to keep Georgiana’s son from inheriting Rob’s rightful home. However, when he and Georgiana are thrown together, he once again craves the forbidden lady he never stopped loving, and a passion that never died bursts into flames.

Facing danger and a long-hidden truth, Georgiana and Rob must confront a relentless enemy and heal the wounds on their souls in order to claim the powerful love that will restore their fractured hearts.

Excerpt:

Oh, dear, he’d read her mind. Her cheeks heated. “Don’t tell me you are going to stand in the middle of Charingham and flirt outrageously whilst everyone in the village looks on.”

He stood straight and tall, his hands clasped behind his back. While his eyes danced with merriment, there was no mistaking the fire banked in them as, once again, he openly studied her every movement. He leaned to her ear, his words a sensuous whisper. “Madame, I do not consider my frank confession to be an exercise in flirting, but if it will get me that kiss, then I shall commence with the task at once.”

“You are outrageous.”

“Indeed, and I thank you for noticing.”

She drew in a deep breath and spoke on the exhale. “I have learned there are four kinds of love, Rob. There is filial love, which the Malverns have barrels of—spilling over the top, I might add. There is romantic love, of which I have no desire to enter into ever again since I have no plans to marry. And then there is love of family.”

Rob lifted a brow. “The fourth?”

“Love of friends. Special friends.”

His eyes held steady with hers, and for a moment she felt as though her heart might burst. “And you wish for me to remain in your love of friends category?”

He stood before her for a long moment, his gaze powerful and penetrating. Then, with a little bow, he kissed her hand. “You are a remarkable woman who speaks well, and with a good deal of intelligence. But just now you spoke foolishly. After our foray by the pond, it has become clear you want me and I want you. Even though you have no desire to marry again, and I am not inclined to wed, we have not finished with each other. Until we do, what exists between us will eat away at our insides until there is nothing left of us, so let’s bring to an end whatever we started sixteen years ago, and then we’ll have this conversation again.”

Good God! She was at a loss for words.

Taking a Historical Thermal Bath Today by Kathleen Bittner Roth

Welcome back to History Undressed, our regular first Tuesday blogger and author, Kathleen Bittner Roth! I don't know about you, but I love a good bath, and a hot tub is awesome, too. But a thermal bath??? Now you're talking! Enjoy!

TAKING A HISTORICAL THERMAL BATH TODAY
by

Kathleen Bittner Roth

As an author, I can live anywhere. Currently, I reside in beautiful Budapest, Hungary. For how long, I do not know, but while I’m here, I am happily making the best of it.

Making the best of it?

OMG, what an understatement!

Budapest is such an amazing city. Merely stepping out my front door means a remarkable day is in the making. My tree-lined street is an enclave unto its own—venerable buildings adorned with statues and all manner of baroque ornamentation, a post office, hair salons, vegetable stands, restaurants, pubs, super market. A couple hundred feet to my right is a trolley stop. In minutes I can connect to all kinds of efficient transportation in the city.

But turn left out my front door, walk to the end of the block, and I’m in beautiful City Park where I can find a castle, a lake, a skating palace (in summer the water is used for boating), museums, restaurants, a zoo, and one of Hungary’s many famous thermal baths.

Did I say thermal baths?

Oh, yeah!

Budapest sits on a huge underground thermal lake so the city is thick with Turkish baths, some of which date back centuries. Stepping into them is like stepping into an Ottoman Palace. Here are my favorites:

Szechényi Baths:
This thermal bath is my favorite. It is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe. And glory be, if this exquisite facility isn’t located in the park right down the street from me. A leisurely stroll and I am inside a grand neo-Baroque building, circa 1881.

There are indoor pools and outdoor pools at Szechenyi—fifteen to be exact, one of them being an Olympic size pool kept at swimming temperature. My favorite is the huge outdoor pool that roils with clouds of steam when the hot thermal air connects with the icy air in winter.

Public baths are cheap in Hungary, even cheaper if you have a doctor’s prescription for ailments such as an ailing back.

Masseuses will crank your muscles every which way for not much money, and there’s a bar there should you thirst for anything from water to mixed drinks.

Besides Szechenyi, here are a few of my favorite bath houses in Budapest:

Gellért Bath:
Located along the banks of the Danube (the river separates Buda from Pest), the hot springs the bubbled up were used by the Turks as early as the 15th century! The baths have indoor and outdoor facilities and are connected to the famous Gellért Hotel. Photos don’t do this remarkable place justice.

Rudas Bath (pronounced Roo dosh):
This thermal bath was built in the 16th century during the Turkish occupation and is still in operation! The tile work is amazing. There is an octagonal pool with a cupola that is sustained by eight pillars. The water in these baths is full of minerals and is therapeutic. A day-time outpatient hospital runs here with a complex physiotherapy department.

Lukacs Bath (pronounced Loo kotch):
The baths operated during the time of the Turks, but in the 12th century, Knights in the Order of St. John used the thermal springs for healing purposes. They were followed by the Knights Orders of Rhodos and Malta and their monastery baths were built there.

Királyi Bath (pronounced Key rye):
The construction of this bath was under the command of Arsian, the Pasha of Buda in 1565, but he died and his successor, Sokoli Mustafa had it completed. In 1796 the bath was purchased by the König Family. It was damaged during WWII. A complete renovation back to its original form such as the Konig Family had it built, took place in 1950.

Dagály Bath:
The thermal water here comes from the Szechenyi Bath. This is a picturesque outdoor area with ten various pools. The “fancy” pool as it’s called offers a wide variety of facilities such as an effervescent bed, a whirling corridor, neck showers, splashing sunbathing, not to mention a spectacular view.

Where’s your favorite historical city or what city have you visited that has its special magic?
If you are ever in Budapest, there is so much to see, but you must take time to visit at least one of these baths. It’s an experience you will never forget.

Wild and Passionate Ladies of an Era by Kathleen Bittner Roth

Welcome back to History Undressed, our first Tuesday blogger and author, Kathleen Bittner Roth! She's here today with another riveting post. Enjoy!

WILD AND PASSIONATE LADIES OF AN ERA

by Kathleen Bittner Roth

I have a predilection for collecting stories of eccentric women throughout history who were daring enough to step outside the dictates of society. One woman in particular is dear to my heart, the willful daughter of an earl, Lady Hester Stanhope (12 March 1776—23 June 1839).

Niece to William Pitt the Younger, the unmarried socialite acted as his hostess and personal assistant when he was England’s Prime Minister (he was a bachelor). Noted for her beauty, intelligence and conversational skills, Lady Hester did such a smashing job serving her uncle that upon his death, the government awarded her a lifetime pension, which she promptly used to pursue a scandalous life in the Middle East. Never to return to England, wild and daring Lady Hester went off to sea, eventually heading for Constantinople, but she never arrived—her ship crashed on the rocks in Rhodes.

She lost every stitch of clothing and had to borrow those belonging to the Turks'. That's when she discovered how she loved the way they dressed—the men, that is. Lady Hester refused to wear veils and thereafter, never wore anything but men’s robes, turbans, and slippers. She tramped about in the desert for several years, slept in the tents of Bedouin sheikhs, traipsed through Turkish palaces, visited a Pasha or three and learned to smoke a water pipe. She also thought nothing of taking a string of lovers, including one twelve years her junior. Her archeological expedition in 1815 was hailed as the first modern excavation of its kind. Soon, she was referred to as the Queen of the East.

In my Victorian series, Those Magnificent Malverns, which takes place in the countryside of Kent, the elderly grandmother, Mum, as she insists on being called, is my representative of these unconventional women who lived during the Regency and Victorian periods. All the stories Mum regales about her past are based on actual events belonging to Lady Hester Stanhope. I simply made Mum Lady Stanhope’s best friend in my stories and had her tramping about the Middle East alongside her.
